A sure-fire way to lose control of your interview is to focus solely on the reporter asking you the questions. A very natural tendency is to address her or him and forget about your intended audience.
Great spokespersons will use a variety of techniques when they are being interviewed that help them ensure their messages arrive correctly with their ultimate audience. Some will think about a key client. Others will focus on a friendly neighbour. Still others will imagine themselves having a conversation with their mom. These are your "safe" targets.
Why? It's simple; their mannerisms will reflect that warm, friendly relationship and their messages will be the ones they intend to convey to somebody in their target audience, not the reporter.
Media are the means by which we communicate with our audience. Next time a reporter's question evokes strong emotions inside you, pause, count (1, 2, 3) in your head, envision your favourite "safe" target, then, and only then, answer your question and bridge to one of your key messages.
The result: message delivered, on target, with effect...and you don't end up on YouTube for the wrong reasons.
